What does the NDIS cover - Blog Cover

Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when trying to understand exactly what’s covered. At Essential Care, we’re committed to helping individuals and families make sense of their options and get the support they deserve. Here’s a simple breakdown of what the NDIS typically covers—and what it doesn’t.

What Does NDIS Really Cover When It Comes to Disability Support & Services?

The NDIS is designed to fund reasonable and necessary supports that help people with disability achieve their goals and participate fully in everyday life.

These supports may include:

  • Daily Living Assistance: Help with personal care, household tasks, and building independence at home.
  • Therapies: Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and psychological support.
  • Transport: Assistance with transport for activities like appointments, community participation, or work.
  • Assistive Technology: Mobility aids, communication devices, or home modifications.
  • Support Coordination: Helping participants connect with services and make the most of their NDIS plans.
  • Community Participation: Support to get involved in recreational, social, and educational activities.

What's Not Typically Covered

The NDIS does not fund:

  • Everyday living expenses not related to your disability (e.g., rent, groceries).
  • Medical costs already covered by Medicare or private health insurance.
  • Supports not directly related to a participant’s disability or not seen as ‘reasonable and necessary’.
