The Grass Isn’t Always Greener: Lessons from the Other Side of the Fence

By Jody Langlois, Co-Founder of Essential Care.

Why going out on your own isn’t always the dream

There’s a strong pull toward independence in our sector. You see it often—care professionals dreaming of starting their own business, being their own boss, setting their own hours. And while I understand the appeal (I’ve been there!), I want to offer a word of gentle caution: going out on your own isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

The stark realities:

Running your own care business means taking on not just the care work, but compliance, HR, admin, insurance, rostering, payroll, marketing—and the list goes on. The flexibility many people seek can quickly become a weight of responsibility.

Preventing burnout

At Essential Care, we created a space where our team can focus on what they do best—delivering exceptional, compassionate care—without being pulled in a hundred directions. We invest in training, support, and systems so you can grow without burning out.

If your considering starting out solo

I’d encourage you to talk to someone who’s done it. Not just about the rewards (they do exist!), but the realities. Sometimes, joining a purpose-driven team that values your skills and wellbeing offers everything you’re looking for—without the stress.

At Essential Care, we believe in supporting care professionals to thrive without going it alone.
